How do we relate in this world? This is a million dollar question. Through peace. Be peaceful inside.

Q: I’ve been to various meditations and tried a few methods. I always had a goal to achieve, something to solve with these, but none of them worked. I was told that I did not believe in these methods enough. Could you tell me whether I believe in them or not? (laughter)
A: The problem is neither with you, nor the meditation. The problem is with the time. This time is very fast. For many techniques there is not enough time for them to sink in and work on us. There has been frequency deterioration over a period of time. The time is restless. Just imagine a person who is relatively restless, for example, somebody is sick, and in hospital, and you want to tell him about a new proposal. Do you think he will understand? His mind is occupied with the family member in hospital. Most people in today’s world are restless, irrespective of countries, or where they are from, even if it is a city or a village. The restlessness is brought on by the time because the time is very, very fast. Before we realise it, it’s morning, it’s already evening. So we are constantly in movement mode. In that mode, no meditation can actually work in an effective way. In such a situation, organised meditation doesn’t work. The best method is to just decide that you will not say any word without your mind being present. No action will be taken by you without your mind being present. If you make that particular decision, you will switch into the level of meditation where you are observing yourself, watching yourself, and going through your emotions, going through your daily life. Once you catch that thread, you are always in meditation. It may not be an organised meditation, but you are always in the mood of meditation. This is very easy to say. Almost all of us use the front side of the brain, the frontal lobe. That is why we are prone to anxiety, fears, and have various types of phobias. It is all because we are frontal lobe oriented. But if we start shifting to the middle and the back, there is no anxiety, there is no confusion. We will be balanced. Each meditation, each technique, each guru, master or each path, each religion, is supposed to bring this equanimity into us. When you say you cannot sit and meditate, it means the frontal lobe is very active, which is normal. All our education systems are pushing us to be intellectually correct, or intellectually aware, but we never think about how we can remain balanced amongst all possible situations in a life time.
So first, you should not do any activity without your mind being present. Your mind is with the activity. When you have your food, let the mind be with the food, so that you experience the food 100%. When you play with your child, be in that activity. So that you have an experience as well as fulfillment all the time. This is one aspect.
Likewise, whatever you say, ensure that the mind is available so that there are no excess words, there is no unconscious talk, unconscious discussion, or even argument or fight. Nothing will happen, just concentrate on the words with mind available.
Third level is thoughts. You cannot control thoughts. They are happening. After thoughts happen, we realise we had that thought. This is the first level of perpetual meditation.

Two techniques to counter the speed of time

1. As I said, we are frontal lobe oriented. How do we connect to the back side? It’s not easy. For that you need to shift your level of awareness for at least some time every day. This can be a meditation. While you are sitting and watching a programme, feel the spine for a few minutes. Just be aware that you have a spine. No need to do any meditation, feel the spine. When you sit in the car and the car is at the traffic light and you see the sign 50 seconds to 40 seconds etc. It counts down. At that time during these seconds, feel the spine. Like that, feel the spine many times a day. Just realise you have a spine. After some time, you will tend to move to the spine faster, and in a few months, depending on how fast you can connect, you whole perception changes. From horizontal, it will become vertical. Your awareness shifts. Your understanding level changes. It is like that. If I am sitting here, I can see this much. If I stand up, my view is different. I can see from above. My awareness changes to a different dimension, just by being aware of the spine.

2. Also, when you close your eyes and feel your spine, you can automatically see that your awareness has shifted to the third eye. So if you concentrate on the third eye directly, this is the junction where 72,000 meridians are connected. Energy goes to that and reaches the 72,000 locations of our system. At the same time, there is always the possibility that when we concentrate and meditate on the third eye, it can overenergise and even lead to paralysis. This has happened even to saints in the Himalayas. They concentrated on the third eye for too long, and then they couldn’t move because their whole system was paralysed. However if you try concentrating on your spine instead, there will be no overenergisation. What is needed in the third eye, will go there, the rest will be located in the spine.
So this is not your problem, this is a problem with time. I’ve given you two techniques to counter the speed of time. Because you have to go with time and be with yourself. That’s the only way we can survive this time.

Furthermore, we must never feel that there is some deficiency in us. This is actually mind’s projection. Deficiencies are always mind’s projection. Mind says you can’t do it. That’s not true. We can definitely do it, but the concepts which we’ve fed into our mind, create an impression that we can’t do it. So there is some problem with us. That has to be completely wiped away. I’m fine just like anybody else. Then each step you take, see if you can remove the mental block. We may not have it, we collect it from the society, also people tell us that you may not be able to do it. Like in the programme in Dubai, somebody said, ’’Mohanji, you can do it, but I am not like you.“ I said that’s nonsense. ’’I have tried and I had conviction.“ That’s the only thing. In the early 2000s when I was practising on my own, I used to wake up at 3am every day, I couldn’t sleep beyond it. I used to be a corporate head of country, so we sometimes had late parties but again, I woke up at 3am and from 3-8am I completely detached myself from the world and meditated. I sometimes chanted, then I meditated, connected to the spine and dissolved. So five hours was dedicated to myself whatever was happening in the world. This helped. After all these years it has given the awareness which I am sharing with people. It is always a discipline and conviction. Even if nothing happens, it’s ok. In everybody’s stage of evolution in spirituality, the first is the experience. We experienced meditation, something is happening, we are very happy. After some time, stagnation. The same thing cannot give the same result. So you stagnate. Most people stop there. Then they go to another programme. There is a sensation for a few days. Then again stagnation. So people do not cross over to higher levels. This is why people do not achieve something.
Somebody asked Buddha,“How can we be like you?“ Buddha said,“That is very simple. Do the penance like I did. Do tapas. He said,“I cannot do that. Because you have done extreme penance to reach that stage.“ Then Buddha said,“Then serve the people, serve the poor, do something for the world.“ If that is also difficult, third is merge your consciousness to mine. Look at me, connect to me, whenever your mind is with me, you are with me. If your body is with me, you may not necessarily be with me because if your mind is outside, you are outside. If you want to be with me, let your mind be with me. Wherever you are, no problem. So you will start moving into my consciousness and you will achieve what I achieved. “

Almost all of us use the front side of the brain, the frontal lobe. That is why we are prone to anxiety, fears, and have various types of phobias. It is all because we are frontal lobe oriented. But if we start shifting to the middle and the back, there is no anxiety, there is no confusion. We will be balanced.

Q: On our path of seeking, how to know whether some challenge is something which keeps us on our path, or if it is an old energy, something which distracts us? How to know that by our choice in the course of action we stay on the right path?
A: It is very simple, how do you know you are growing? It is by how much peace you have inside, whatever happens outside. This is the best yardstick you can use.
How do we shed energies which we don’t want? You have to actually stop talking about it, thinking about it. There are three levels where we attract. First is emotion, that we think about it. We keep emotion. Second is the intellect, we analyse it,“Oh, why did this happen? Why did this man come into my life? Why did this event happen? Why this situation?“ All these things are actually more or less hooking you to the situation. Third is we sometimes act on it. We become very aggressive, we do something which hurts us, then it hurts other people.
Sometimes similar people keep coming back to our life over time. Why does that happen? It is always because a set emotion is at play. It’s like a CD. It plays again and again. So we attract that kind of people, we attract that kind of situation. We attract that kind of emotion for which we need to observe and let go. You can go through it but at the same time, do not connect to it. It’s practice. You need to practise it. There is no shortcut towards it. Of course, now we have regression therapy and all the different things where you can move into your subconscious and take something out. That’s different. For normal life, acceptance of your current reality is extremely important. A very easy way to get out of this cycle is again through the spine. Spine helps a lot. We have no idea how changed we can be the moment we shift the operating level from the front to the back or the middle. Immediately so many things you consider as very important will go. Many people whom you felt were very important, too. Some of them might be taking your energy away all the time, yet you still keep them because you are used to them. All those things will drop off and you’ll be free from inside. The moment you are free from inside, the whole world is yours. Mind is a very good servant, but a very bad master. As a servant it is very good because when you eat food, the mind is with the tongue, you feel the taste to experience the food. When you listen to music, mind is with the ears, you actually enjoy the music. Whatever you do, whatever you feel, whatever you experience, mind has a role to play. At the same time if mind is controlling you, then it’s a different story. It creates havoc. So mind is a good servant but a bad master.

Q: I feel that I have became too peaceful, that I have lost all emotion, if something happens, I am not bothered at all. I find it difficult to communicate with people. Is that normal or not?
A: This is what you have been looking for, what you have been asking Baba all the time. Now you want to go back to the restlessness!? (Laughter)

Q: I feel a big attachment to the suffering of others. I can deal with my own suffering very well. Ok, it is karma, no problem. But injustice and the suffering of others, especially animals disturbs me a lot emotionally and I don’t know what I can do. All seems to be insufficient. What should I do to transform that to be better?
A: This is again degeneracy of time. In the Indian system, we have 1.7 billion years of the Golden age, Sathya yuga. There is no ritual, no chanting, nothing, all people existing at that time are of master’s stature like Sai Baba. Everybody is like that, godly. There is no evil, injustice, negativity.
Then comes Treta yuga, Lord Rama’s time. This is approximately 1.4 million years. That is the time when the good and the evil started working on this planet. This is according to the scriptures. During the Treta time, good and evil are at different places, not in the same location. But they have a conflict.
Then comes Lord Krishna’s time, 800,000 years of Dwapara yuga. Good and evil were in the same family.
Now, 4000 years of Kali yuga, the time we are in, good and evil are in the same person. Sometimes one is good, sometimes one is bad. There is a huge conflict inside an individual.
So when you look at the whole life, the environment creates a lot of effect. Sometimes the environment makes people violent. Most criminals are not born criminals. They are situational criminals. They did something because of the pressure of time, then they went to jail. It’s happening like that.
In this time the whole machine is run by emotions. Look at the world outside. People are extremely emotional, full of anger, hatred, all sorts of things. We don’t talk about love much and even if we do, people are suspicious,“Why does this man love me?“ If you say,“unconditional love“ this is absolute nonsense. We only love for a reason. If there is money in your pocket, then love is ok. This kind of situation is the lowest frequency. In such low frequency, destruction, death, pain, trauma, all these things are possible. And the collective consciousness of the people is low. Look at the general consciousness of the generation from a world perspective. What are 7 billion people thinking about? Not many people are thinking about helping other people, maybe 10%. And they help other people only as a ritual. Most of the other people are in chaos, struggling, running, they want to make money. For example, I was talking to a group of students in New York . They all study various courses. I asked them,“Why have you taken this subject?“
80% of the students said,“This gives us a lot of money.“ That’s the wrong reason for taking up the subject. But today the world is operating on greed i.e. making money, competition. So what you see outside as injustice is because of this. Look at our modern medicines. Most of the medicines that we use today are tried on animals. A lot of animals have died so that we survive today. We have always had a beautiful natural system called Ayurveda. My mother’s family has always been traditionally ayurvedic. My mother’s uncle was one of the most respected ayurvedic practitioners of his time. Before he passed away I asked him about violence in the treatment. He answered,“Ayurveda never believes that this is for humans. All beings are the same before Ayurveda. The whole world belongs to everybody, every species. Ayurveda has never believed that this was created for human beings. For example, we had a science for elephants. I have seen people who could communicate with elephants, wild elephants who have killed people. I have seen one man talking to them and the elephants went to one side. We have always had all these sciences, but because of greed we destroyed most of it. And this was created by saints over years, not by injecting it into animals, not by killing species. It has been derived from nature. Nature gave it to them.
If you look at the whole of nature, god has given us three energy sources with which we can live peacefully and which will not pollute the world: sun energy (solar energy), wind energy, water energy. All these things cannot pollute the world, but what do we mostly use today? Fuel from the underground which pollutes the environment. It’s like guts are being spilled out. All the toxins, all the organs inside are outside. The world has become like that. Why has it happened? It’s the time. It’s the frequency of the time. When we are in the lowest frequency, greed is the operating level. That is creating injustice.

So how do we relate in this world? This is a million dollar question. Through peace. Be peaceful inside. Ok, the environment is like this, people are like this, systems are creating people like this, so how should we make a difference? By being peaceful. By being calm. So people come to you and ask,“How can you be peaceful in this situation?“ That’s the only way and that’s the best way. Lead by example. Do not be angry with yourself. This is not good because it gives you illness. Do not be angry with the world outside. That is also not good enough. But sometimes you can express anger just to convey a message. Just for intensity. It means, like a snake you can hiss, but you should not bite. So the other person knows you can be dangerous and will go away. If you are angry with yourself, you will surely have an illness later. So it’s not good to be angry with yourself, accept yourself.“I’m not happy with the situation, but let me be.“ Second is don’t be angry with society. Instead, replace the anger with love. Your expression should be love instead of fighting and shouting. Say,“Come here, I love you. I’m with you.“ If you convey this message, it will be very soothing for the other person.“You are not alone. I love you.“ These are very strong messages. And you should mean it, it is not just the words. If that is the level of operating, a lot of peace will happen outside of you and inside of you. And the richness from inside is permanent. If you make a lot of money there is no guarantee it will stay with you, but if you are rich inside, you carry it always. So whenever you get angry, think about me (laughter).

Q: We are in a time which is speeding up and since 21st Dec 2012, when the Sun, Earth and planets were in alignment. Since then we have been exposed to huge electromagnetic waves from the cosmos, from the core of the Earth, aiming to change us into 3rd, 4th, 5th dimensions. As these energies are strong, how to align ourselves with them? Probably through love and peace, but can you tell us more about it?

A: There is nothing for us to do with this because we cannot do anything other than what we are conditioned for now, but the energies have definitely shifted and are shifting. It is a process. It is happening. The main shift is from the fourth root to the fifth root. The fourth is the emotional root, the fifth is the intellectual root. The fifth root is very close to the soul root, the consciousness. This shift itself can destroy one third of the total beings of this world because this has the potential to wipe away one third of the total beings of the Earth, not just the population.

The major shift is in the pattern of the breath. From horizontal to vertical. We will try a small technique:

Close your eyes, keep your spine erect, I’ll guide you.

No movement for a few minutes. Go to the root of your spine. Breathe consciously ujay. When it reaches the top of the head, hold it. Then release it all the way down. Breathe in, hold, breathe out, hold. Breathe in, hold 10 seconds, breathe out, hold 10 seconds. Repeat three more times.

Simple breath, but how it made the mind empty! This is just one of the techniques, where if you empty your mind, you are ready to receive higher energy. All you have to do is empty the mind. Trash, trash, trash.

So your question was how to adapt and be eligible for higher energy, the answer is emptiness. (laughter)

Q: I am here with my boyfriend and you came into our lives last year and really, look, my tears have started flowing, really, my boyfriend has changed sooo much, he has found his peace and our life has moved into a completely different, more beautiful direction. Now, in our everyday conversation, his attitude is, “I don’t want to hear any negative news, don’t tell me those things“. If I want to tell him about some film he doesn’t want to watch it, it affects his peace. If there is some news about someone’s tragedy, he doesn’t want to listen to it, in order not to disturb his peace. I think one has to hear about the tragedy of other people, to see what is happening. What do you think about it?

A: Should I agree or disagree? (Laughter)
The source of everything is an impression. When I say,“monkey“, suddenly you have a picture of a monkey, an image and characteristics of a monkey in your mind. Where does it come from? This is already in the system. Impression is the root cause of all our concepts, all our expressions, all our imaginations, everything is based on impression. Impression is the data that we collect from the world outside using the body, the mind and the intellect.
Running away from the situation is not a good idea, because actually that is called escapism. At the same time, getting involved without equipment, without proper preparation cannot help you. Like if you are in a war without a weapon, it means you will be killed. Collecting a lot of impressions from the news, television and people is not a good idea because it adds to contamination. The less impressions, the less concepts. The less concepts, the freer we are. We are having inner freedom. But let’s say income tax law changed in this place. Because I did not see the news I did not know, so I didn’t pay the tax. What will happen? You cannot say I believe in Mohanji and God, so I will not pay a tax. There is a saying in Islam, in Muslim,“Believe in Alah, but tie your camel.“ (Laughter) So it is important to know what is going on around you so that you can be prepared. At the same time if you keep the impressions and keep creating concepts, it will bind you. So you need to strike a balance between these two. Be aware but at the same time do not be involved.
Last week, a man told me,“Mohanji, you do not know how much I love you. I cannot control the love. I’ll be ready to kill somebody who is against you!“ (laughter in audience) This is very dangerous you know. (laughter) I said to him,“Now if people are not very nice, it is not good to be passive, don’t just lie down and get the beating. But at the same time don’t kill. Both extremes are bad.“ Somewhere in the middle, be kind, yet at the same time don’t take nonsense.

So I think I’ve told you the answer. Be aware but don’t be emotional about it, so that emotions are not stored inside. That will not create concepts. The more concepts you have, the more bound you are. The more paralysed you are.

Q: We know we should let things go, shed the clutter, could you give me advice on how to do get rid of accumulated anger? I have a lot of it in me as a consequence of various suppressions. Besides hitting and kicking a pillow or a bag, how to cleanse this as even my children tell me I ’ve forgotten how to laugh.

A: This is the situation for everybody. It is not only your accumulated anger. It is inherited, too. We sometimes inherited it from the family. Let us not think of ourselves only as individuals. We are an individual for the outside world, but we have a baggage from the family as well. We have our own baggage which we collected in this life, but we also have baggage from the ancestor. Understand one thing. The heavier the baggage, the more expensive is the travelling. Especially if it is other people’s. The best way to counter it is to help people whom you do not know. Just help people whom you do not know without any reason.mohanjis-50th-birthday-celebration-at-mohanji-ka-aangan-jammu-1 Many people think that to help other people you need a lot of money. This is absolutely not true. It’s not about the money. It’s your attitude that makes a difference in the world. I’ll give you one example. Somebody similar to the question you asked. This is in the North of India. One person who is very rich (very rich in the sense she is fine with her money, she doesn’t need to work) was full of anger. She loves me a lot but she doesn’t love anybody else. I told her,“Take care of my children.“ We have a school center for the children of Islam, like the Gipsies, who are three to fifteen years old. We have 130 children. Many of them are abused. If people knew they came to this place for education, they would beat them up.“ Sometimes a five-year-old girl will be looking after a three-year-old sister. That kind of situation. Very very bad. So I told this woman,“You should take care of this place.“ When she started going and experiencing the pain of small children, she changed completely. She can’t get angry. Because she sees so much of this and she is involved. Suddenly the whole thing changed. Then in 2013, we had a festival called Diwali, she asked the children,“What gift do you want for Diwali?“ They said,“We want Mohanji.“ (laughter) They called me and said,“They want to see you.“ So I went there. It was such a beautiful experience, the love they were sharing and they had only seen me in the picture. They hardly see me. I don’t go there all the time. But with the picture they have developed so much love. Then I asked this person,“How do you feel now?“ She said,“Mohanji you changed my life.“ I said,“I did nothing. You changed it by changing your attitude.“

Q: How to overcome my fear of flying?
A: For fear of flying, I think you have to go for regression. You have to go to the root where it started, and take it out.

Q: How to know which is our true vocation in life?
A: What is good for you is what expands you, what makes you rich inside. Any job you do which is creative in nature, which makes your heart expand, is good for you. When you get up in the morning and you feel,“I am happy, it’s morning! I must go to work.“ That means you love the job. That expands you. That is good for you. But if you feel,“Oh my god it’s morning I have to go to work.“ (laughter) This is not good for you. It’s very simple. What makes you happy, what makes you settled is good for you, whatever you are pushing yourself to do is not.
Remember just one thing. When you are natural, you are powerful. When you are unnatural, you are very weak. If you remember this, you will understand everything else in life.

Q: My parents are very ill, especially my mother, how to help them?
A: Every situation has a root, it’s not only this one day. So first of all, acceptance. This is the situation. Second, give courage, not tears. You have lived your life, because of you a lot of people are happy. Say the good things. Say the best things. Do you know a story of two people in one room?

A STORY about two hospitalised men

There were two sick people in one room in a hospital. One guy was on one side, the other one was next to the window. So the first one could not see what was outside. They were both bedridden. He asked what was outside. The guy next to the window was giving stories of beautiful things, he was telling all the good things. Later on he died and the other guy went there and there was only a wall! All this time the guy who died had entertained the other guy. This way we can make somebody’s life better. But if we sit and cry, we pull ourselves and other people down. Sympathy and self-pity are two things which are like poison. Sympathy and self-pity, just like poison, paralyse you and other people.

Q: How did you know that a huge shift in consciousness happened to you and that you reached the ultimate?
A: Do you want to know the real truth? I still don’t know. I never asked. I never checked. I have never asked if I have arrived or if I have been evolving.
There are various states of the mind. At the beginning we have inquisitiveness to know why this is happening, where I am standing, all these questions keep coming in the mind. Mind is overactive because we are between activity and result. Activity-result, activity-result. Mind asks all the questions,“Where have you reached? Are you enlightened?“ All these questions come. In Sanskrit this is called savitarka samadhi. When you need an answer for all your questions, it is savitarka samadhi. Then it shifts into nirvitarka samadhi where whatever happens, you don’t have any questions. You are absolutely peaceful. You have no questions. Then it shifts even further to a level where whether a thing happens or not, whether a situation is there or not, whether people are coming to see you or not, nothing matters. So at each level, we are in a different mode and we have stopped looking where we have reached. All this will go. Mind becomes absolutely empty.

Changing the Frequency Changes Your Life

Mohanji quote - Observe yourself, you will knowQ: If certain experiences or patterns keep repeating, is it because I still have a karmic account or am I handling it without awareness?
M: This is actually both.
Firstly, the pattern is normally inbuilt in our constitution. When we take birth and when we go through time, each time we are actually manifesting the inherent pattern over and over again. To cut that off, you need to detach from all the activity. For example, if we are constantly having failures in our activity, we have to look at what sort of emotion we are using for each activity and then consciously one by one, we have to detach and say, ok, let this happen. Second option is, in the spiritual path, surrender the fruits of action, we are not bothering and we are surrendering the fruits of action and we just act as surrender. That is why we call work as worship. Or relationship is worship. Everything becomes worship, then it gets nullified, it gets diluted. Whenever there is ownership, the pattern stays. Whenever there is no ownership, the pattern gets diluted. This is one part.
Secondly, the reason this is happening is because first of all we do not know that we have a pattern. We blame other people. We sometimes just get overwhelmed with this repetition which means we just move on with life, without thinking, without a conscious way, so that it never leaves you.
Third thing is if there is even one relationship that has got a karmic link. Every relationship has a karmic link. Otherwise two people cannot meet. When the karmic link is very clear, we need to understand that each moment, each individual is valid for a particular experience only at that point in time. People come and go, situations change, but then our existence on earth purely depends on what we are or what we are manifesting. This is the key aspect we must understand. Also every pattern has a root cause. First of all, the root is prarabda, the thing which you brought forward. Then the activities of this life reinforce it. It brings us into the same pattern. We should understand both these things. For every activity, ok this is happening, let me handle it and then just move on, so that you always keep the inside clean and completely uncontaminated. Then patterns will dissolve.

Q: Is it true that one cannot attain self-realisation without a living guru?
It’s almost like, ”Can you attain warmth without the help of fire?” It’s almost like that. A living guru who has already crossed over can be a good guide. Likewise a person who is looking for enlightenment and walking towards the path may not even know which way to go. A living guru’s presence has always been glorified by almost all the masters and the scriptures. To illustrate this, I think I have told you a story about Narada.

Narada asked Mahavishnu why he was not achieving the highest point. He is a great bhakta, he is a great devotee and he loves Mahavishnu, he chants all the time, but he is not able to touch that spot, the spot where he can taste the honey, the ultimate realisation. Mahavishnu said, ”Because you don’t have a guru, you don’t have a guide.” Then he asked, “Then give me a guide.” So he said, “Walk along the banks of the Ganga early in the morning and the first one whom you see is your guru.” He walked and walked and there was none. Finally he saw a boatman. When he saw the boatman, he was disappointed, “How can a boatman teach realisation? There is no guru.” He went back to Mahavishnu who was very angry. He said, “You are stupid! I told you that you should accept the first person whom you see on the path as your guru. It doesn’t matter who it is! It could be an enlightened master, it could be a boatman, it could be anybody. But an instruction from an avatar, an instruction from a god, should be followed to perfection.” So he was cursed to one thousand lifetimes spent on the Earth. Narada was worried, he went to his father Brahma and told him the story. Brahma said, “Ok, no problem, but everybody has a destiny. Take a lot of paper to Mahavishnu and ask him to write the whole destiny, (like nadi astrologers do. They write about your future lives and past lives), write down the whole history, the whole pattern of what will happen to you in these thousand life times. He gave a lot of paper to Mahavishnu and gave it to him. Basically it was an astrological chart or the destiny chart for a thousand lives. He brought it to Brahma and Brahma said, “Ok, spread it on the ground, and roll over it.” So he spread it on the ground and rolled over it. Then he finished the thousand life times in this rolling. That is why people do the production of rolling in some temples. They roll so that they are actually unwinding the karmic baggage. Then they went back to Mahavishnu. Mahavishnu said, “Do the same, go to the banks of the Ganga and walk.” So he saw the same boatman and when he went closer to the boatman he bowed down and requested to take him as his disciple. Then the boatman turned out to be the Lord Shiva!

The point is that guru is there so that disciples know where they are going. Otherwise they think they are on the right track and what they’re doing is entertaining the mind! What we call practice, is not always practice, it is basically entertaining the mind. Once this is understood, then it’s easier. Somebody who can see from above knows that this is exactly where we are going. It’s much easier. That is why guru is important.

Q: We know that with the present life we have to suffer the karmas and sins of past lives but, why must this be; because we do not remember our past lives.
M: As I said, most of the life times are repetitions. Each life is more or less a reflection of the past lives. First of all the constitution, the character, the mold, it’s the same. Only thing is that life is different. For example, we use the body for a particular period of time, to experience or fulfill a particular set of desires. Then that body is done and then we leave the body, and then we take another body, and again everything is probably a bit of upgrading. For example, you have a laptop and software. After a year or so you have refreshed the software. You upgraded it and it probably has more functions. Like that another software comes and gives you even more functions. Every time a year goes by, you have an upgraded, better computer. It’s almost like that. Each life time there is a bit of upgrading happening there. But the basic structure of the computer remains the same, the constitution, the character, everything remains the same, except the software is getting upgraded that is also what we call awareness and corresponding experiences as well. When you have an upgraded system, experience is different, too. When you have an old primitive system, experience is different. Each life time is like that. That is because we have chosen a particular constitution for a long duration of time. And that keeps on repeating. In order to cut this off, you need to be clearly aware.
Number one, be aware of the accumulation of desires. More and more desires are accumulated each day.
Number two, impressions. When we meet a person, when we go through a situation, when we interact with the world, even when we watch the news, the TV, we watch everything, we are constantly collecting impressions. Each impression has the potential to become an expression. So every expression has a thought or a word or karma behind it. This is the way we are accumulating. It is important to curtail the impressions in thoughts, words, and action. Also, through body, mind, and intellect i.e. three levels of consumption.

There are stages in samadhi. One of the stages of samadhi is called savitarka samadhi. In savitarka samadhi a person experiences a particular thing, but is not worried about the result of it or about the reason for it. If you are not worried about the reason for a particular happening, you already have a level of peace within. Ok, one thing is happening, a situation is happening, it’s fine. You are constantly in that mode, where you are fine, you are ok, so that struggle between why and why not will not be there, “Ok, this is happening, let me handle it.” The levels of peace determine your states of samadhi. Samadhi is a state. Earlier the questioning, doubting, controlling, all these things go and they say, ok, acceptance happens. Everything is fine. Then you go further into the state where whether a thing is there or not, ok. So levels of the samadhi change. As we evolve in the samadhi states, we also decrease the number of life times.

4_yugasUnderstand one more thing. I think we are going through the eighth era, time of Manu. Each time has four segments. One is the golden age, then the Treta yug, Dwapara yug, and the Kali yug. This is the cluster, 1.7 billion years of golden age, where only evolved souls with very, very high frequency can exist. The lower frequency cannot exist on earth. So there is no conflict at that time. Golden age is the time where very few people with very high frequency, operating with siddhis and all those kinds of stuff. Then comes the Treta yug, the time with Sri Rama, again evolved beings, but they have a life span of ten thousand years on average, lesser population, higher frequency. Then comes Dwapara yug. One thousand years is one’s life span, still lesser frequency, a set of entities much less than in Kali yug. Then we come to Kali yug which is only 48,000 years. In the time of Kali, it is a very, very dense and very gross existence and people are all in the mode of emotions, anger, hatred, all those kinds of stuff and that is the time when maximum souls can take birth. Just like if you call some people for satsang you can count the people coming on your fingers. But if you offer alcohol and meat, you will have hundreds more coming. It’s like that. During the time of Kali, there are many more births because in this low frequency time a lot of souls can take birth and also experience the terrestrial. Then it gets recycled again back to Sathya yuga. So we are in the transition now. Each time many of us have taken birth. So the souls who are operating in higher frequency you can very well understand that they have been existing in more than Kali yug. They have been existing in other times, too. Many high masters have continued through each era and they have taken different bodies but they have continued in that frequency and their need for continuing or their purpose of being in the body is just like a beacon of light. Just to show the people or guide the generations saying, “Look here, there is a frequency of this level which you can operate in. Why do you choose a lower one?” Basically they lead by example. There are various masters each time, each generation to show the light and they have probably existed in the era of higher frequency.

These four together is one Manu time. That continues each time and the eighth Manu time is now coming up. So each time the repetition happens. Each time maybe you and I will take a birth again. In the next Manvantara we will probably have the same conversation. If you remember in Russia they found a microchip which is millions of years old on the stone. It’s on the Internet, you can see that. Where does the microchip come from? They say that aliens deposited it. This is not true. It is not aliens. It is that we actually had a civilization equal to what we are now or more developed than we are now, in another Manvantara, too. Each time we have repeated life, repeated the patterns, everything, these incarnations, so it is important to understand that the lower frequency is a binding frequency and in the lower frequency you can take birth only during the time when it is inducive for you to be on Earth. For example, in the lower frequency you cannot take birth in Sathya yuga, Golden age. Because frequency itself is different, and only elevated beings can take birth then. That is why they say during the Sathya yuga only very few people are on Earth. And also good and evil do not exist together. Good and evil are in different planets, which means it’s a frequency i.e. good means operating in higher frequency. Only they can exist. But in lower frequency, many more can exist. This is to give you a broad picture.
Why you do not know this is because you are not changing the frequency. The moment you are within, you are connected within and you are growing in spirituality, you will definitely understand. It is not difficult to know what you did, what happened in the past, but even on a laymen’s level, if you understand yourself, if you observe yourself, then you will know that, “This is exactly my pattern that I have unconsciously been bound by.” And if you choose to change the pattern, life will change. That is why if we insist on seva activities, serve the people, serve the animals, birds, in your own way, so that your dimension changes. Your frequency changes. This is why all the masters, all the religions, talk about service. It’s very important to have karma yoga (selfless service) mixed in our life.

Q: Unconditional Love is unbinding but what about when I get mad at my roommate for not doing the dishes?
M: Ha, ha, ha, ha. Call it soulmate rather than roommate, then the problem is solved. Expectation is the problem there.
Q: Then I do the dishes myself.
M: It’s expectation. We expect certain things and when there are more expectations, there is less peace. When we have more expectations about somebody, we have less satisfaction. Instead, like in Gandhi’s principle, people come to Gandhi’s ashram and put their slippers all over. Gandhi personally went and put them in order. They did it a few times, then they were conscious and they started putting the things in order. Likewise, one person was telling that they went for a course, a teacher training programme or something, the teacher trainer was not on time and he is normally on time. He was 15-20 minutes late. When they went around checking why the person was late, the person was tidying up the beds. Because people were just leaving things in the room in a very untidy way, so the teacher first of all went around the room and made everybody’s bed, clothing, everything and then he came to the class. He didn’t say anything. There was no resentment, nothing. It happened for two days. The second day, they found out what was happening. The third day everybody got up, everybody tidied up their room, they cleaned everything themselves and went back to the class. So, leading by example has a lot of power, rather than preaching, shouting. Mahatma Gandhi used to do that when people came to his ashram, and made a mess, he always cleaned without asking anybody, telling anybody. Then people understood. This is the way it should be done and got ashamed. There is always positivity in doing what you think is the right thing and demonstrating, leading by example. There is a lot of power in it. So don’t be angry.

Q: Often in life we find people who are selfish and self-centred moving ahead, but those who are nice and kind do not.
M: I already answered that question. The time of Kali is gross. This is a very low-frequency time. So the success which we talk about is momentary, sometimes material success. This is the success we are talking about. Do we know how much peace of mind they have? Many people whom you see or feel successful cannot sleep well. They cannot eat well. They cannot eat most of the food. All these issues are there. So don’t look from a terrestrial point of view. See how they are within. If you understand the reality, probably the person who is according to terrestrial terms not so successful, may be very successful inside. Because they will be peaceful inside. They will be happy with what they have. Being satisfied at every moment is success. Don’t think if you have a better car, you are more successful.
There is a recent anecdote about a singer Yesudas. He had a programme in the UAE, and one guy, I don’t remember whether he is a sheik or somebody, was so enchanted with these songs and music, that he went up to the stage and handed over the keys of his Rolls Royce to him. He said, ”Take it.” He was so happy with his music that he gave him the Rolls Royce. Yesudas gave it back to him,” I wouldn’t be able even to change its tyre, if I take it to India. I don’t have the money for the expense of keeping a Rolls Royce.” Sometimes things can be a very big burden. So from an external point of view, “Oh, my god, he got a Rolls Royce!” The second point is that is he able to maintain it. Not all things that shine are the things which are going to give you satisfaction. We must be clear about it. And why the selfish people, because the frequency is suitable for them, not for the lighter beings. That is why I already answered that question. During the Kali the frequency is dense, gross, they are more accusing, complaining, cheating, stealing, all these things are possible now. It is not possible in Sathya yuga or in Treta yuga and it is a little bit possible in Dwapara yuga. But in Kali, everything is possible: destruction, etc. Have you seen what is happening in Iraq and Syria? Children burnt alive, women sold as sex slaves. We are living in the same world right? There are a lot of things going on, very tragic. An earthquake happened in Nepal, so many people died. We don’t even know how many died. So this is all part of the current frequency, the current level of operation. Time is deciding beings here. Time is favourable for dense beings to operate. That is why we see greed, anger, cheating, being judgmental, all sorts of things. And when you say, “Please don’t do that, be kind to people, birds, animals, it’s a small life”, people do not understand. They think you are probably an abnormal person. So that is the operation.

What is a Guru?

Q: Please explain the concept of a guru. How can one’s or my, his or her spiritual growth and cleansing depend on someone that is a guru?

In the macro level

A: The primary concept of a guru is that guru is a principle. Guru is a tattwa. Guru means the remover of darkness, somebody who brings the light into understanding, the light of awareness, the light of logic into our ignorant path. One who brings knowledge, awareness and clarity to our life is a guru. In that context guru cannot be just human being. The sun brings light into our Milky Way. Sun brings light to all the planets, so the sun has a role of a guru. You have to consider the sun in the context of the guru principle too. Guru principle runs through every being of this universe. Everybody has a guru aspect in them. But I know this question is about the physical guru who talks. I will come to it later. First of all understand what guru is. Guru is a principle which can operate through any medium, any being or any situation. Guru needn’t even be a walking, talking being. It can even be an understanding which happens in your mind. It can be the tree, or the leaves, or the wind. Certain revelations happen when we see certain things. Like when an apple fell on Newton’s head. He thought about the theory of gravity, right? Some other people also had an apple fall on their head. They only had a bump. (laughter) This is the difference. If it leads to something which is more revealing and awakening, that has to be considered as a guru. In that case, the apple is a guru, right? That triggered a particular process of thought and that created a particular path of understanding, knowledge, science. Guru should be considered in that aspect, the macro level.

In the micro level

In the micro level, the guru that we see in normal life, we call a person a guru if he is knowledgeable, if he is able to help us travel the path of life, if he is able to guide us to higher understanding. But again, there is a fundamental non-understanding here. In today’s world there are various types, shapes and forms of people who teach or convey a message to people. I believe all these people are necessary, because they are helping somebody. All these people are catering to certain people, because not everybody can understand or appreciate one path. Like, if I only speak Latin or Italian, most of you will not understand what I am talking about. I need to speak a language with which I can convey the message. Like that, there are various mouths operating and required in today’s world to convey the right message to people.

The gurus and acharyas

Acharyas are teachers, they have acquired book knowledge, they have learned, externally they have acquired information and they are conveying this information to the world outside. They look like gurus, they also probably have a name of a guru, but understand they are only expounding book knowledge or knowledge which they have acquired over a period of time. This is different This is acquired information. Knowledge has come from the outside into inside, it is churned and it is transferred back. It’s a process. You take in information, churn it, make formats and present it back to society. These are acharyas, teachers.

Now there are gurus who have awakened the knowledge from within. That means knowledge is already available, past, present and future exists simultaneously in absolute time, so they are established in knowledge. When they are established in knowledge, and knowledge is awakened in them, and they are expounding that knowledge, these are gurus. These are the real ones, connected to the source and they tap into the source as per the requirement. This is the fundamental understanding every seeker should have. A guru who is already operating in the highest consciousness, who is operating from the source, can transform a person just by a glance because he is already in the silent mode, established in silence. If I have a torch in my hand, I can show you the light as well. If I am only showing you a picture of the torch and say,“This is how the torch looks,“ you will definitely have an idea of how the torch looks, but you will not have light. This is the difference. This is the fundamental understanding every seeker should have. That means information can be available, if you google or type certain words on the Internet, you will get the information, but what about experience? Experience changes you. Experience makes you. Experience is you. This is the one thing we must understand. You are the experience. If you want to grow spiritually, root in experience, not in words, not in theories, not in understanding. That is a problem with the kundalini experience or enlightenment experience as well. People talk a lot about their own experience and seekers think,“This is how it should be.“ It can never be the same because each one has a different constitution. Each person has a different metabolism, different configuration, so it will be different. This is the reason. I hope it is clear now what an acharya is, and what a guru is. A guru has an awakened knowledge from within, an acharya has an acquired knowledge from the outside. First, acharya does not have much walking space. He can only walk as much as the knowledge he collected and transformed into readable material that can be conveyed. Second, there is no guarantee that acharya has understood the subject well himself. If you have read something, assimilated it, digested it, you might have understood it based on your level of operation, your IQ and your level of understanding from which you are churning. That is why we see distortions in the performance of the scriptures. No guru will ever say,“Go over and kill somebody.“ No guru will ever want violence, but today if people are resorting to violence, what does that mean? It means wrong understanding of the right scriptures. This is all because of acharyas. Acharyas are teachers, they can also interpret the scripture saying,“This is also a way you can look at it.“ Then some people will buy it, some people will “subscribe“ to it. They will say,“No problem, this is also one method of looking at it.“ And they start operating in it. Once they start operating in that line, catastrophies happen and distraction happens. This is the difference between an acharya and a guru. A guru will never do that because he is connected to the source. He will only give you what you need. He will not give you his opinion, he will only give you the truth, because there is no opinion to talk about there. Truth is one and the same truth has been spoken through generations through time by various mouths. There is no way you can speak a different truth today. I can speak a different language today, that is because I live in this time, but I cannot speak a different truth today. Nor will further generations to come speak a different truth from what I am saying. Likewise even Krishna used to say,“Thus spake the masters.“ Lord Krishna was an avatar. An avatar used to say,“As spoken by the masters before me, I am speaking.“ That means he always regarded and had gratitude for the ones who came before him. That is the way you operate when you are absolutely established in absolute time or you are established in knowledge. Then there is no ego attached to it. It is just knowledge as per requirement. Like we breathe air as per the requirement of our body. Our inhalation, exhalation are not as per requirement of the mind. We breathe spontaneously because we have to breathe. That means we have taken as much air as we need. It’s not like greed,“Oh air is there, let me collect it and keep it.“ That doesn’t happen with breathing, that happens at non-understanding level. So book knowledge converted and interpreted can be distorted, distortion is possible.

First of all understand who you are following. If you want to follow a guru, follow a guru who is connected to the source. It helps you. If you follow a guru for understanding’s sake, e.g. you have been at college, universities and schools, and you gathered information which brought you to this level, have gratitude. They are all good. It’s not that they are not good. At the same time, they have limitations. You can cross over the limitation and they can also cross over the limitation, but that’s not our programme today, that’s not our call. This is individualistic.

Why should somebody follow a guru?

This is your choice. You have every right. Why should somebody follow a road sign? The same question. Why do you choose a road sign? Because you don’t know the way, right? If you knew the way, you would not even look at the road sign and the road sign would never be unhappy because of that. It will never say,“I wasted my time standing here.“ The true guru will do the same. He is available. You can choose to follow the guru’s guidance, or also not to follow the guidance. This is perfectly up to you, and no true guru is insecure about it, just like the road sign is not insecure about it. If a guru is insecure thinking,“Nobody is looking at me,“ that means he is at acharya level. He is worried, he is insecure, he has problems, just like if some people keep criticising another person. They are insecure and their insecurity is being expressed. Similarly, if you are a person who is established and you come only with eligibility, you will get anything. That is also there. You can choose the guru, but the guru has to choose you as well. This is both ways. Why should I choose a guru? You have every right not to choose a guru. The guru also has the same right to choose you or not to choose you. Understand this is not a supermarket where I pick up some materials. Actually speaking, knowledge is not the right of a student. It’s the gift of the guru. Why is it a gift of a guru? Because the students do not usually know what they want, but the guru knows how much a student can carry. I am talking about a true guru, not the acharya. Acharya will give you the books, telling you,“Learn all this, you will reach somewhere.“ So true gurus will always know what the disciple needs and will only deliver that. So you can choose a guru, and the guru also has the full right to choose you or not to choose you.

Q: I come from a very, very protestant family. Now my experience is different. How do I marry the two ideas, the two concepts together?

A: All of us, right from our childhood, as we grow up, are fed with concepts more than with food. E.g. tradition, family, lineage… We say we come from this respected lineage which used to be rulers or landlords before, every family has something, so you should behave in certain ways, you should walk in certain ways, you should talk in certain ways… Right from our childhood we are fed with concepts.
As we progress, through religion, through the schools we attend, through society,even through get-togethers, programmes, the right and wrong is fed into us. That takes away our freedom of choice. Everybody or most people are like that. In many of the western countries, probably the condition is much larger. Like, you have walked the path for twenty, thirty years in one method, or one chosen path for a long time, and suddenly a new idea comes and you become fascinated by it and want to explore it and there is a guilt of leaving what you have already tread and excitement with something which is seemingly uncertain or interesting. Everybody has this conflict.
What happens is that we are also animals in a different way. We chose intelligence over might. Or we can say we chose predictable intelligence over the sixth sense. This is what happened to us. When we were in the forest, our sixth sense was very clear. This predictability also confined us to a certain pattern. This pattern created the comfort zone. Leaving the comfort zone is very difficult. That is why this question arises ’why should I follow a guru’… because these are alien concepts. Some people are following it in another region of the world, but how can that be adapted to a path where you have been brought up in a more or less programmed atmosphere, where you go to church, you go to the mosque, you have certain levels of worship on a methodical basis, sometimes the surrender is transactional, activities are transactional, and prayers are in a particular order. All these things will appear as conflicts in the path to come. At that point in time, the thread to hold onto is awareness,“Am I changing? In which direction?“ Not being a rebel saying,“I will destroy everything so that something can happen in the future.“ That is basically non-understanding as well. That’s ignorance. Because by destroying things, you cannot guarantee change within your life time. However by going through the process and if it is suitable, you can only consume some food which suits your body. If different food is given to you, you will not consume it. Like in certain areas of the world people eat dog, cat, or snake meat, all these things, which many people who are meat eaters will not consume. Why is it so? It doesn’t suit their constitution, or it doesn’t suit their understanding or interest. In the same way, you will accept only something which really suits you. It means awareness is important so that you should know what you are doing.
Why has it come to you? You should ask this question. Why has this particular method of prayer come to me? I’ve been following one path for a long time, but now it has come to me. This is question number one.
Number two,“Now that it has come to me, how is it relevant to me? Is it liberating me or is it binding me? Have I been bound by the path for so long and have I lost interest to explore or to see if I am doing the right thing? I am doing things mechanically, because my grandfather was doing it, my father was doing it, and I am doing it.“ This is the way most spiritual practices happen today – repetition because of lineage or tradition. However, at no point in time are we checking,“Is that relevant to me?“ The moment you sit down and think,“Is some activity relevant to me?“ If it is not relevant, if you have the guts and courage to drop it, at that point in time the shift happens. It’s not being a rebel. It’s being aware that,“I am doing the activity out of compulsion, out of repetition or out of fear, mostly out of fear of heaven and hell, or fear that somebody will not like it. Some of my family members will say that I am not in the right way.“ So we follow out of compulsion, but is that giving you any kind of elevation, any kind of pleasure or any kind of fulfillment? If the answer is no, no, no, it’s time you left it. It might be the best thing, or you might also have the soft leaving, which means you leave for some time, taste it and you go back again. But it is important to evolve.

Make an effort to spread the word of love. That is what you are.
Knowledge is not the right of a student. It’s the gift of the guru. Because the students do not usually know what they want, but the guru knows how much a student can carry.

I always say,“If you have taken one life, use that life to become God. One with God. Then it’s worth it.“ Otherwise we take life times in rotation and achieve nothing. We taste a lot of things which are available on earth at various levels of mind, body, intellect, then we die and then we come back.

(Again birth, again death, again in the womb of a mother, it keeps on going)
That is exactly the point we are talking about. If you have one life, use that life to be fully aware. ”My job is to experience whatever I wanted to experience, express whatever I wanted to express, and then get out of the place, get out of the game.” If that clarity is there, there is no conflict. Otherwise the social conditioning, the concepts, keep binding you, they keep pressurising you, and they keep making you a slave. I am not against any religion. If you want to experience how to be a slave, you have to be a slave. That is your choice. But in the path of liberation it has no validity. This is the only equation I am saying. In the path of liberation you can never be a slave to anything including habits, including relationships, including dependency, including place, time, objects. Ramana Maharishi used to eat food from the shell of a coconut. Some of the devotees felt it was very bad that the master ate food from the shell of a coconut, so they brought a plate for him. He said,” So you want to teach me attachment to this plate now? With the shell of the coconut, all the shells look the same, this shell or another shell, it doesn’t make a difference, but with a plate you will start owning it, where is my plate?” It might seem very simple, but this is how the mind works. Mind always holds on to small things, but that is important for the mind. Mind will say, “This is my plate. Don’t you dare touch it!” Why you say that is because of ownership. It is part of mind’s job. Even in spirituality we have ownership of our god, guru, we have ownership of all these and it binds you. At the same time if you do not have ownership, if you just do serving, it’s a beautiful scenario. Especially when the guru leaves, why are disciples affected? Ownership of the image. You like the image. You get connected to the image. But not a moment in time does the disciple feel guru is not the image. It’s a principle which is working through this body. He has gone, very good, ha, ha, but this is the point.

Transcending the Earth

A: Earth is definitely a beautiful location and we must be grateful to the Earth and all the beings of the Earth, because the gratification you are getting from the Earth, you are not getting from elsewhere. That is why we are here today and are walking this Earth. So we must be grateful. Understand that nobody can own the Earth. If you are on Earth, you have to pay the rent, and the rent is service. If you are using this realm, just like you are using this space now, you have to pay the rent. They are not going to allow us to sit here and leave without paying the money. Likewise the Earth will not release you until you settle the bills. And the bills are selfless service. That is why we are talking about various methods of helping people. The more you serve people, the more liberated you become. The Earth will bless you, ”My son, you walked this Earth, I am happy, you have served my people and the other beings and I bless you. You can go.” Then you will not come back. In that mode it’s fine. But through the senses, we become fascinated with the Earth, this is also fine. But what is the use of being earth-bound? Because we are moving in the duality mode. We need awareness to know, ”I am in this place, what is the best I can do? What else can I do?” There are two things. One is do your best, and the other, a constant quest, ”What else can I do?” Both are liberating. If you constantly keep looking in this way, ”Ok, I have done this, what else can I do?” you expand that mode again. Then you finally reach a level where you are actually in perpetual action mode for a purpose, a purpose-bound action, and then, “I am delivering at every point in time. And I am moving on.” Connection with the Earth is also fulfilled, this is a debt to the mother for nurturing us. That is fulfilled and you are liberated. If you want to come back, you will need to take a body and come back to the same Earth. This is what you will do. Those people who fall too much in love with Earth, definitely do come back and work on Earth. Body has a duration. This is your choice. You can definitely come back. Keep working on the same area. This is up to the individual.

Understand from which level the mind operates

Q: Why am I so rebellious in doing things that are good for me, which involve loving myself, eating right, doing work on time, exercising. It seems when I’m not rebelling, I am impatient because I do not grow and change as quickly as I understand. I understand quickly, but I manage slowly to be able to practice or create a healthier habit. Can spirit help me? Is there a technique to improve my ability to take care of myself?
A: Rebellion is in the mind. When you are rebellious it means the mind is portraying that aspect of you. Where is the rebellion coming from? Which aspect of mind? The mind that does not want to work, or the inertia associated with the mind. If you know that this is a consistent pattern, at that time we have to detach from that faculty which creates that pattern, especially the aspect of mind which creates rebellion. Move backwards and watch it, “Ok, you are creating this rebellion, this aversion towards exercising, aversion towards doing the thing at the right time, and I am not that. I am beyond it.“ It is always true that you are beyond it, but at the same time, you are helpless because you are in control of the mind. Mind always creates patterns. Mind loves to have repetition. Mind loves to have patterns. Mind is like that. Mind does not like whatever is not repetitive. That is why we resist anything new. We resist change as well. It is important to know how the mind operates.

It is also important to know from which level the mind operates, where the mind is standing, which platform it is operating from.

Inertia

If the platform is inertia, it is important to know that we must detach ourselves from inertia. Inertia says, ”Ok, it’s fine, you can sleep some more, you can rest some more, you can do it tomorrow…“ These are all signs of overpowering inertia. Inertia is overpowering and it’s creating these kinds of signs. Then it is important to understand, when mind says, ”We will not do it tomorrow, we will do it now.“ That is the best way to counter it.

Action

If you want to beat tamas, inertia, you have to marry rajas, action. Action is the best way to beat tamas. There is no point in meditating. There is no point in doing something else. These are all probably diversions or substitutions. Substitutions do not work here. You can’t substitute one thing. If you are thirsty, you have to drink water. There is no way you can eat food and quench your thirst. You need to have some liquid when liquid is required by the body. Just like that, every aspect has its value. You cannot substitute that. But when you know that, ”I’m not able to move further because of inertia and the mind rooted in inertia is creating such problems, that’s the time to detach and move into action. When mind says, ”tomorrow”, do it now. This is the importance of being in the now. This is very important to know. If you operate in the now all the time, inertia cannot stay. Inertia always takes you backwards and forwards, to the past and the future. This is important to understand. Where are you operating from and why are you operating?
When you do not do something and then you feel agitated, this is also part of inertia. It means you do not want to do something, and then you start blaming yourself. Both are two sides of the same coin, or two aspects of the same thing. They are dimensions of inertia. Inertia is postponing things, then putting guilt into you later on. It is important to understand what is working within. If it is inertia, and if you are clear about it, cut off. And the best way is action. I tell people, go jogging, play tennis, do activity with a physical body, more than you did before, so that the tendency to procrastinate is defeated. At the same time, you try and sit to meditate, mind will love it, because mind will manipulate that and convert it into inertia, mind will say, ok, now you are feeling tired, sleep now. So what happened? A good activity which would have raised you to the level of sattwa, the mild, the clean and the pure, brings you down to the level of ignorance, because for procrastination, you don’t have to do anything. By nature you procrastinate. But to create sattwa, it is the positive action at the time, of being in time, it takes effort. We have to really tune ourselves to achieve that. That is not easy. But procrastination and indulgence are no problem. If you like to drink alcohol you’ll have many friends. But if you sit and meditate, or if you meditate at the same space and time, then people will say, ok, after my drink, I’ll come to you (laughter). This is the way life goes. In most of the situations you can see that happening. In most of our life on a consistent basis, many times we see that happening. It means, good company is hard to come by. That is because good company needs sacrifice. Sacrifice in the sense, what you like to do versus what you have to do. What you like to do versus what is good for you. Maybe the food you eat is not good for you.

Purity and the subtle

If you are operating in the level of sattwa, in purity and the subtle, then you will only consume what is good for you. You will definitely reject what is not good for you. It’s not what you like to eat. That is why we go to fast foods, things which make you a slave of it. It makes you repeat it. You consume it once, again when you are hungry, you suddenly remember the fast food joint. Not ever do we consider, ”Is this actually what I want?” You never consider what your body wants. Not because you have deficiency. This is how mind operates. Mind’s pattern is like that. It catches on to something which you like to do, or it creates things that it likes, and that’s usually related to senses. Something which is very tasty, may not be the right food, and the right food may not be tasty either. Some of the best medicines are very bitter, but that is what cures you.

I clear doubts, but ask yourself,“Have the concepts been cleared?“ That is more important than doubts. Mind poses doubts. Mind will continue to pose doubts, but when the concepts are cleared, the root is cleared. I would rather be happy to clear the concepts. I would rather be happy if you attain the state of non-conformity, and you are flowing like a river so that you are not bound by anything, you are free, you have full freedom, you are liberated, no concepts are binding you, you are not bound by frames, you are not creating further frames and also you are existing in truth. That is what should be achieved with all this exercise. This is what is meant. I’ll be glad to clear doubts, because doubts also block progress. But doubts are minor compared to concepts. Concepts are the more powerful barriers in the path of spiritual evolution, any evolution, on any level, concepts are the binding factor. They never allow you to see the truth. They give you distorted truth and mind buys it, mind subscribes to it saying,“This could be the truth.“ This is also why some fears do not leave. Some fears for which the mind says,“This is dangerous.“ It makes us invalid, our motion is limited. That is the thing.

The key point is whatever you do, do it with conviction. That gives you intensity. I tell people, if you live only one day, live that day with intensity. It is not intensity out of the mind. It is the intensity of the purpose. If you look at Jesus’s life, every moment was intense. Because the purpose was so overwhelming and so real, it made your every moment intense. And that intensity is beautiful. Because if you are living only ten years more, those ten years will be worth it. Or a few days more, it will still be worth it, because a whole life wasted over concepts, over theories, over perceptions and a few days lived with intensity of purpose, it is a huge difference. Life becomes worthwhile. That is the difference between living and existing. We are existing most of the time, not living. ’Living’ means you have to live with intensity. And that intensity should not be created. It should happen based on purpose. Mind is such a culprit that it hides and attacks. There are certain animals which hide in the bush and attack. Mind is like that. It catches you at the time when you least expect it.

My wish is that you are able to see reality and the truth beyond the mind. And make an effort to spread the word of love. That is what you are.

If you are able to spread the word of love, saying that,“I am love, you are love as well. I am god, you are god as well.“ The simple truth of spirituality and without any binding. Not forcing,“You should meditate ten times a week!“ Not so. This is all immaterial. If you like to meditate, meditate. If you don’t like to meditate, still be clear and pure within. That is the constant exercise. To be pure within, you need to be like a watchman guarding the gate. You need to control the inputs in thought, word, action. You need to control the inputs through the intellect, mind and body so that at every level we maintain our purity and purification. Nothing will affect you any more. You are pure and clean while living and you will be pure all the time.

Visualisation

Q: When you say everything happens, it’s not really us in control. It’s the divine coming and working through us. What about these documentaries like “The Secret”, etc. where if you visualise something, you can get that, and have this experience?
A: Actually, has anybody had that experience? I’m not talking about you. Did you read any testimonials at all? “The Secret” has sold well, I understand. I’ll answer that when I come to it later.
Q: That visualisation has changed things, yet certainly not the overall picture. Isn’t visualisation like a wish?
A: Yes. It is not the divine working through you. Divine is always available. The part of the divine is your soul. Before we started this journey, before your incarnation, you chose what you wanted in this life, including whom you would meet and what things you would achieve. That is where free will entered. The moment you entered into your womb, you started your journey. Then it is a pre-planned trip. That means you drew your map before the journey. You said, “This is where I want to go and I need this much time for the journey.” One hundred years, two hundred years, however long you want to stay in your body. That is chosen. Thus the journey is chosen, where you will take your birth is chosen, all this is chosen and you come forward. Once you start the journey, it’s basically the road map, or destiny, taking you. That is where your free will ended. This is how you started the journey. In this case, if you say, “I want this particular thing, let’s say, a Mercedes car.” If you think you need to have a Mercedes car, you decide to have it, and you are visualizing. I don’t know how “The Secret” tells you to do it, but you visualize whatever you are doing in that picture. Where did this thought of a Mercedes car come from? Why a Mercedes car in the first place? That ingredient already sat in you. Why didn’t you choose a bicycle? Or an aircraft? There is a saying, if you dream, dream like a king, not a minister. So, what actually gave you the thought of this particular thing? It’s because that ingredient had already been sitting in you. If you do not have an inclination for having alcohol, you will not even have a thought of having alcohol. So the ingredients are already there. And then, what are you doing with this visualisation (or you can look at it as meditation) is that you are focusing on one aspect which you really want so that the other things move away. The clutter is removed and you focus on that thing. Then it manifests, because it was supposed to manifest anyway. You see? This is the truth. Think about it.
Don’t just accept what I say. Think about how it works. Where does the thought come from? A wish? A desire? There is something in you which tells you that you need a particular thing. There are so many things in the world which you do not need at all, or that you are not even aware of. However you need a particular thing. Where is the thought coming from? The desire. The inclination for that thing. Where does the inclination come from? From karma. That is what moved you here. That is what made you take birth. So the karma gave you the inclination, or the desire, and the desire gave you the thought, thought gave you the word, or visualisation, image, whatever, and then it became an action. Then you think, “I visualised enough, so it materialised.” I say, “Congratulations. :)” (laughter) Because I always see the gimmicks in it. You are trying to manipulate your mind and make it believe that you achieved it. That is the doership issue, “I am doing it.” So you feel happy, “Oh, I’m amazing!” But actually what has happened, ha, ha? You just removed the clutter. So many things were there. You focused on one thing, so it happened. It was supposed to happen anyway.

Wealth and true charity

Happiness Desktop BackgroundYou can see very, very rich people with very poor hearts. Have you seen? You can see it in our society. Extremely rich, they don’t know what to do with their money, but very, very poor hearts. They will not give anything to you, or anything for a good purpose. But they will hoard, they will hold all their money like this and they will die. And the children will come and waste the whole thing. You can see this. Especially first generation rich men, most of them are just watchmen. They live like watchmen of their wealth, and then the next generation comes. They have no clue where the wealth came from, and they will destroy it. Because they were born in money. Why is this happening? It is because in one life time they will be craving wealth. But if you have wealth and no maturity, you will be much poorer than the poorest man. If you have wealth as well as maturity, you will have a balanced existence. I always tell people, if you have wealth, be grateful. And also, share it with people. Not the whole thing, I am not saying to blow it away, I am saying, keep whatever you need, it doesn’t matter. If you are able to have a Rolls Royce, have a Rolls Royce. That is probably what you wanted in life. Enjoy it. Be here, enjoy, have good food, have whatever you need. But understand, do not be dependent on that. That is not moving you. Enjoy it while you can. At the same time, share so that you feel wealthier. You will actually feel the wealth. Only when you share and spread the happiness, can you actually feel that you are good enough. ACT to stop hungerI was discussing the Daan. Daan means giving away. Daan should always be with a flavour that you are grateful to the person who is receiving because he is relieving you from your karmas. If you give something to a person say, “Thank you for accepting this from me, and please enjoy. Thank you for relieving me from my afflictions, my karmas because of this, I’m grateful to you.” This is true charity. Not that, “I’m a richman, ok, you are very poor, please be poor so that I can keep giving to you.” This is sadism, this is not good. These are subtle variations of the whole thing. I am saying this because we must be clear where we stand. E.g. “I’ve donated 10,000 USD to charity.” Excellent, it’s out of 10 million, it is still ok, but the attitude of charity is what? “I’m also looking after the poor people. But I like them being poor so that I can keep paying them and feel gratified.” That is not exactly charity. That is a sadistic pleasure. We should give so that it makes us happy, and the receiver is happy and gratefulness sprouts in us. If gratefulness sprouts in us, we are liberated all the time. We stay liberated. This is one aspect.

A STORY OF A BEGGAR IN THE PALACE
A man is sitting and begging in the palace of the king. He can see very rich princes and princesses and all the people going up and down and he aspired, “I should go inside.” And he dies and takes the next birth as the princess’s son. So he is inside the palace. But he still had the attitude and characteristics of the beggar. All the while he had been standing outside, but now he had taken birth inside. In that life he couldn’t have gone inside. But in this life he came inside. But the outlook is the same. A poor servant comes in and asks, “My child is sick, please can you give me some money?” The man says, “Oh, no, no… I cannot give you anything.” That will be the attitude. Why? Because inside the beggarhood still continues. You can see this in life.

So manifestation of anything also needs eligibility. Eligibility has to be acquired. And the highest eligibility is where you have everything, but you are not dependent on anything. That is the highest possible eligibility, and that is also liberation. All I am talking about is pointing towards liberation. Understand this from every angle. If you assimilate all this, you will know the path of life, the path of the pathless. And you will be able to see through the world, to see through situations, to see through people. Because these are obvious things.

So doing as the books say, this is all probably good. These practices are definitely beneficial to remove clutter from the mind. They leave the mind free, empty. This is all nice, but what is the objective? I know so many people, day in and day out praying for wealth and richness, but not for wisdom. If you have money, but no wisdom, what’s the use? If you have money, but no maturity, that is even more detrimental. It pulls you down further and you do all sorts of atrocities with the money. Because the ego comes forward as well. “I have purchasing power, I have wealth, I am a rich man. I am much better than you.” Ego, pride, lust, all these come forward and you get contaminated further. However at the same time, if you have wealth, you are grateful for it, you are enjoying it, and you are using the wealth for your own benefit as well as for others’ benefit, it is a beautiful scenario.
Money and wealth come to you when your stature grows. Money comes to you when you elevate yourself, your consciousness, because you grow more and more into the subtle plane of energy. Money is matter. It conglomerates to you, it comes to you. You don’t have to run after money. If you run after money, there is no guarantee you will get it. But when your stature grows, money flows. Please remember this clearly. When your stature grows, when you are operating more and more in the plane of energy, of subtlety, the gross aspect comes to you. Then you may not even need it. That is what I am saying, you may have everything, but you are not bound by anything. That is freedom. That is liberation. You have millions, but you say, ok, that is fine, you can still only eat as much as your stomach can contain. You cannot eat currency. This aspect will always maintain your maturity, your wisdom level. At that time you will have everything you need, but will not be bound by anything. That is absolute freedom. As your stature grows, money flows.

Q: Is all the money that comes into our hands meant to be, is it all part of our karma?
A: Yes, right. The nature of money is that it is valid only when it is moving. If it is sitting inside a box, it has no validity. Of course, money has its value, but its movement is its life. Money is energy. Money is transactional. When it is transactional, when it is moving, it has validity.

The hoarding of money is not a good idea, because that is not satisfying anybody. It’s only satisfying some insecurity of the individual who hoards the money. Money needs to be moving. It’s like drawing water from the well. The more water you draw water from the well, the more water comes in and equalises. If you are naturally creating that recycling of money, more and more money will flow, you will be fine. Whether it’s the money that you keep with you or money that is flowing through you, it doesn’t matter, as long as you are on a perpetual happy path. Let the money flow, it comes and goes. You are fine, things are taken care of, you are happy.

But the moment you start chasing money, then you have all the associated problems. You will tend to hold on to money, you will tend to store money, you will have insecurities, you will have anxieties that somebody will come and steal it. That is why when we become richer and richer, what happens is that we build more and more cages around ourselves. We destroy our freedom and we depend on other people to protect us. This is another aspect.

The worst aspect is when you sell your integrity, your soul to make money. That is very bad. Many people do that. They are greedy, they want money, so they do things which are completely unethical. They make money and they try to regain their stature or status through using the money. But I’ll tell you one thing. Once the inside is contaminated, cleansing is very difficult. Keep this clean. Do the right thing. The best thing is to stay with the truth. Always stick to the truth. Do what is right. What is right is what does not damage your conscience. If something does not damage your conscience, it is good for you. It will maintain you. It will stabilise you and it will take you forward. Whether you are rich or not, peace of mind is more important. If you are very rich and there is no peace of mind, what is the use? You will have an excellent bed, but no sleep.

Operating in the Now

Q: If I am supposed to live in the present and doing meditation makes that easier, how do I make plans and set priorities for the future?
A: The answer itself is in the question. If your purpose of now is to make a plan for tomorrow, you must do that. Like, you were planning for my trip here. If you say, “I will not make any plans for Mohanji’s arrival from the airport, then how will people come and meet me?“ So at that point in time you have to make a plan for my coming to South Africa, these are the venues, these are the programmes, and to announce it. That is operation in the now. That is not contradicting that point. The point is that you are operating only in the now. You are not influenced by the guilt of the past, nor anxieties of the future. This is the point. I am operating in the now. What am I supposed to do now? This is the question. ”At this point in time, the thing on my table is Mohanji’s visit to South Africa,” and then, ”What should I do about it?” Dissect it. ”These are the available dates. These are the possible programmes. These are the venues which could be possible. Contact the corresponding people, put things in order and announce it.” That has to be happening now. But the activity is happening in the future. That is not contradictory. You do what you are supposed to do, even if it is planning for an event in the future, now. It is not that you worry about something in the future, ”Oh, Mohanji is coming, I’m worried…” What for? That is not solving the point. Be in the present, do whatever it takes to make the present fulfilled, complete.
